As Mum of 2 young children, having Japanese Demi Pairs has been essential. Aside from giving my children a second language, it also allows our family to grow and learn from diverse personalities and culture, making us all more accepting and better individuals.

節分👹Setsubun 🫘

A fun Japanese tradition to celebrate the change of the season (turning to spring in Japan, not so much in Australia 😆) it is usually celebrated on the 2nd or 3rd of February

Ehomaki is made with specific ingredients to bring fortune and longevity, it is not cut but eaten whole. It is eaten in silence facing the lucky direction of the year. This year was West Southwest.

Somebody will dress in an Oni mask and enter the house while everybody throws roasted soybeans at them and says “Oni wa Soto! Fuku wa uchi!” Out with evil! In with fortune!
Everybody will then eat their years in soybeans plus one for good luck 😁

You don’t need to cook specifically for them, they are definitely able to prepare food for themselves as long as there is food for them to use (make sure to let them know what the can use as they will usually be too shy to help themselves). They will enjoy sharing meals with the family but if you aren’t eating together just make sure there is food for them to eat whether it is leftovers, packets of ramen/instant noodles or food for them to cook or make sandwiches etc. If they are out without you, i.e. with friends or at school/work, they can buy their own food.

Having a Demi Pair or Au Pair is supposed to relieve the pressure at home not add to it🧡

In our house, the kids and our Demi Pair are always making various types of origami and playing Japanese rhyming games, like jan ken pon (paper scissors rock). Having fun together, learning another language and sharing in experiences and ways of a different culture, opening their eyes to the world, is priceless. Let alone having a Japanese meal cooked for the family each week!

If your kids are at school or you work casual hours and don’t need full-time care/help, a Demi Pair might be just right for your family. Unlike an Au Pair, who does 30hrs or so per week for pocket money, a Demi Pair usually does 18 hours of work in the home in exchange for a room and meals. As they are not committed to as many hours at home, they may want to either study or get a part time job or just spend time exploring. They can also be quite flexible with working more if you need over school holidays etc, for some pocket money.
As a stay at home mum with casual work hours myself, having a Demi Pair has been the perfect balance for us. Allowing me to work more if needed, take sometime for myself each week and knowing that the house is being kept in order and the kids are being lovingly looked after. With the wonderful bonus of having a Japanese meal cooked for us once a week and the kids learning the Japanese language and culture.
